There’s an exact moment, when the kids cross the gate and see the garden open up in front of them, when they stop asking about the tablet. It isn’t that they forget it little by little: it’s all at once. They let go of your hand, take off running across the grass, and don’t remember the screen again until it’s time for bed. Any parent who has gone looking for that knows how rare and how precious it is.
Room enough to get tired of playing
It’s half an acre of garden, and it’s fenced. That word, fenced, is the one that lets you breathe: you can lower your guard, pour a coffee on the porch, and let them run without keeping an eye on them every second. There’s a bounce house, a slide and a wooden play structure with swings. There’s room to spare for a kickabout, for bikes, for chasing whatever needs chasing.
And when the afternoon cools and the air turns fresh, the fire pit gets lit. There’s something about an open fire that hypnotizes kids and relaxes grown-ups, and it’s the best way to close out a day of running around.
Saturday and Sunday plan themselves
Half an hour away is Reino Animal, which takes a whole morning and sends the kids home happy. The pyramids of Teotihuacán, also half an hour out, are one of those places you remember as an adult: climbing up, looking over the valley, feeling you stood inside something ancient and vast. And if the plan is a sunrise balloon flight, being close makes it possible without impossible pre-dawn starts.
Back at the house, the kitchen is equipped to cook dinner together, or you can order traditional Mexican food with an hour’s notice and nobody has to cook. There’s 150 Mbps wifi everywhere, in case the night calls for a movie before bed.
There’s room for everyone
The house sleeps up to 20, so it isn’t just the immediate family: cousins fit, grandparents, the lifelong friends with their own kids. And since we’re pet friendly, the dog comes too. A weekend where the whole family is together, the kids sleep worn out from all the playing, and nobody missed the screen.
